| INTRODUCTION Passenger car turbochargers require accurate
orientation to ensure correct fitment in the restricted space available within the typical
car engine department. This can be difficult to achieve without appropriate dedicated
fixtures, and can be time-consuming.
The Turbo Technics orientation rig
accommodates virtually all car turbocharger types with its universal turbine
mounting flange, and allows both the centre housing and compressor housing to be
orientated quickly and easily, with a high degree of accuracy. |

INSTRUCTIONS Step by step
instructions on the orientation process:
1. After assembly of the turbocharger with
both compressor housing and turbine housings fitted, all fixing bolt or circlips should be
left loose enough to allow rotation of these components.
2. Before mounting the turbo onto the
orientation rig, select two stud fixings which will fit snugly in the turbine housing to
manifold flange holes. |
3. Ensure both mating flanges are clean and flat, before placing the turbo squarely onto
the orientation rig. Adjust the knurled knob until the clamping force is just sufficient
to prevent the turbocharger moving. |
 |
4. BEARING HOUSING
ANGLE
Set the protractor to the desired angle and lock its position. Ensuring the base of
the protractor is kept flat and level, slide it along the base plate until it meets the
bearing housing oil drain flange. Rotate the turbochargers bearing housing until the angle
aligns, then tighten the turbine housing flange. Example: The bearing housing angle for the Holset turbo shown measures
202° |
 |
5. COMPRESSOR
HOUSING ANGLE
Adjust the reach and position of the orientation rig degree wheel to align with the
turbocharger compressor housing. Once aligned, slacken off the wheel and rotate until the
desired angle aligns with pointer. Lock the wheel position and rotate the compressor
housing to a position corresponding to this angle.Example: The compressor housing angle for the Holset turbo shown
measures 328° |
 |
| 6. Tighten the
compressor housing position and double check both bearing housing and compressor housing
are correctly aligned. |
7.ACTUATOR
CALIBRATION
Slacken the dial indicator arm and position the gauge until it aligns squarely with the
end of the actuator rod end. Ensure sufficient travel movement and set the gauge to zero. |
 |
| 8. Correct a
suitable air pressure hose to the actuator, and increase pressure gradually until the
actuator rod extends. Adjust the actuator rod length to correspond with the manufactures
recommended pressure / travel specification. |
| 9. Ensure all
fixing are tighten before removing the turbocharger from the orientation rig. |
